  72.    ASP GROUP LICENSE FOR VENDINFO TOOLS

  75.       Rams' Island Software and the Association of Shareware Professionals
  76.       (ASP) have negotiated a group license for use of the basic VENDINFO
  77.       tools by ASP members. Under the terms of this agreement, each ASP
  78.       Author, BBS, Vendor, or Press Member is entitled to register one
  79.       VENDINFO tool -- either VendEdit or VendPrcs -- at no cost. You will
  80.       receive the same benefits as if you paid individually for the
  81.       registration, EXCEPT that the current version will not be mailed to
  82.       you. You are assumed to have received it in a mailing from ASP, or by
  83.       other means. (You will receive the current version anyway, if you
  84.       register both VendEdit and VendPrcs, paying the fee for one, or if
  85.       you agree to pay the small additional charge for this service.)

  87.       You may register for any of the VENDINFO tools or services by com-
  88.       pleting the form found later in this document, and sending it to us
  89.       in either hardcopy or electronic form. If you were an ASP member on
  90.       12/31/93, or joined later, you may simply write "ASP" in place of the
  91.       registration price on the form. If you are not an ASP member, you may
  92.       use the form, but must pay the indicated prices.

  94.       When you register VendEdit or VendPrcs -- whether by the ASP group
  95.       license or by paying individually -- you acquire a license to use the
  96.       current version indefinitely, as well as any maintenance upgrades to
  97.       that version. However, you will not automatically receive updates
  98.       (see "Auto-Upgrade Plan", below). Major upgrades (new features) will
  99.       require payment of an additional fee, or participation in the Auto-
  100.       Upgrade Plan. This "unbundling" has been done to minimize the cost of
  101.       the basic toolset while still covering the ongoing costs of the
  102.       VENDINFO system (such as handling of Product Registry materials).

  105.    COST SAVINGS

  108.       There are a number of additional VENDINFO products and services
  109.       available. You can obtain them at a reduced rate if you sign up for
  110.       them at the same time as your initial registration, since this
  111.       reduces our processing costs.

  124.    AUTO-UPGRADE PLAN
  125.    -----------------

  127.       Participation in the Auto-Upgrade Plan will allow you to receive all
  128.       new releases of your registered tools by mail for one year (or four
  129.       mailings, whichever comes first). This includes both minor main-
  130.       tenance upgrades and major upgrades (with any necessary new keys to
  131.       allow you to use them).

  133.       Authors will want to subscribe to this service, because lots of new
  134.       features are planned for VendEdit. The new features planned for
  135.       VendPrcs are less extensive, but distributors will want to be sure
  136.       they have them early, so they can handle any new versions of the
  137.       VENDINFO records as soon as they appear. Even single-line, noncommer-
  138.       cial BBSes (which pay no fee to use VendPrcs) may want to subscribe
  139.       to this service to insure that they always have the current tools.

  142.    PRODUCT REGISTRY SUBSCRIPTIONS
  143.    ------------------------------

  145.       Authors are encouraged to send their VENDINFO records to our central
  146.       Product Registry (and are given significant incentives to do so --
  147.       see VendEdit documentation for details). These will be made available
  148.       to subscribing distributors immediately, and will also be available
  149.       for custom queries by distributors and users by Spring 1994 (details
  150.       for custom queries are still being worked out).

  152.       Serious distributors will be interested in full-service subscriptions
  153.       to the Product Registry data, by mail, on-line access, or both. These
  154.       services begin in January 1994, and will provide access to all VEN-
  155.       DINFO records and various other information. This will be a great way
  156.       of discovering new products and authors, maintaining current contact
  157.       information on known authors, and noticing new versions of your
  158.       existing products.

  160.       The mail subscription entitles you to monthly packages containing all
  161.       received VENDINFO records (the first package will contain the com-
  162.       plete set to-date). Due to media costs, these packages will not
  163.       include screen shots (contact us if you want to work out a subscrip-
  164.       tion arrangement that includes them).
  165.  
  166.       BBS subscriptions will provide on-line access to all records, includ-
  167.       ing screen shots. When our VendPrcs Plus program is ready, it will
  168.       allow off-line query preparation and very efficient on-line sessions
  169.       (as well as many other useful features). BBS subscribers will be
  170.       required to purchase and use that tool when it's ready (late Spring
  171.       1994, $75-100), but will be able to access the Registry using a
  172.       normal communication program until that time.

  183.       Early subscribers to either service will receive several months' free
  184.       access. The clock won't actually start on subscription charges until
  185.       at least April 1994, but the services will begin immediately on
  186.       receipt of payment.

  189.    VendLib SOFTWARE DEVELOPER'S LIBRARY
  190.    ------------------------------------

  192.       The VendLib Library allows software developers to build VENDINFO.DIZ
  193.       access directly into such products as BBS programs and upload proces-
  194.       sors. It will also be very useful to distributors who write their own
  195.       customized database software, as it will allow them to directly
  196.       access all fields in each VENDINFO.DIZ file from within their own
  197.       software.

  199.       VendLib includes C source, and currently supports C/C++ applications.
  200.       Plans are underway to extend support to other languages in the near
  201.       future, but the source provides a good guide for writing your own
  202.       access functions, if you prefer. Purchase of this package includes
  203.       one year of support.

  205.       By special arrangement with TurboPower Software, we also offer a
  206.       license for the use of their PKZIP-v1.10-compatible UNZIP functions.
  207.       Since the compression used in VENDINFO records is PKZIP v1.10, this
  208.       will allow extraction of VENDINFO data using an internal decompres-
  209.       sion function, if you don't have access to this functionality else-
  210.       where. These functions are not PKZIP-v2.04g-compatible, however, and
  211.       are therefore not intended for general use.

  214.    VENDINFO COFFEE MUGS

  217.       Several people asked us to make available the VENDINFO coffee mugs we
  218.       showed at the 1993 Summer Shareware Seminar, so we've added them to
  219.       the list. They're rather nice, and we'll be happy to discuss shirts,
  220.       mouse pads, baseball caps, etc., if anyone's interested. These items
  221.       are subject to continuing availability.

  245.       If we receive your registration form by some form of secure e-mail
  246.       (e.g., CompuServe e-mail, FidoNet crash mail) and you ask us to do
  247.       so, we will send your registration keys by the same mechanism, for
  248.       fast registration. We reserve the right to add a small fee for this
  249.       (not more than $4.00), but our current policy is to charge no fee
  250.       except for international FidoNet crash mail.
